News

March

To clear up a small rule issue, any angler who wishes to fish 'catch and release' does NOT have to kill any fish, barbless hooks must be used.

Boat booking vouchers are available in outlets, these cost £2 each and are needed if you wish to book a session on one of our boats. They will also be available from the secretary and Brian Jones.

A number of fish have been caught at Nant Moel, these have been caught on a weighted nymph, a Gold Head Hairs Ear (natural & olive) seem to be most popular, the fish have be taking this about 300mm (12") down.

February

Clubs water were stocked ready for the start of the season (1st March), fish between 2lb - 3lb were stocked. The boat container has been situated at Nant Moel, work will continue through to next month before the boats will be available, a key is needed to access this container. The fishing log book is placed in the container.

AGM News

The Associations AGM was held at Aberdare Rugby Club on 26th November. As a result of this the following changes were made to the association rules:

  1. Both Bwlfa and Nant Moel will be closed during February for maintenance.
  2. Fish Farm to be closed this season and this will be reviewed at the end of season.
  3. Fish limit to be reduced from 3 fish per day to 2 fish per day, the following rule will be changed.
  4. If you are fishing to 'take' fish you MUST kill your first fish, you may continue to fish catch and release until you kill your second fish, you must then stop fishing. If you are fishing catch and release you must use barbless hooks.
  5. No price increase for 2007
  6. All fish to be purchased due to the closure of the fish farm.
  7. Catch returns MUST be completed and posted in the appropriate box at the reservoir.

We have a new association treasurer, we welcome Mr. Paul Davies into this role.

October 2006

Work has been carried out at Nant Moel to make fishing 'The Bay' area at the far end. The trees have been cut and trimmed in order to give access to this area. This should prove very 'fruitful' next season when the 'Hawthorn' are on the water.

A letter has been sent to Dwr Cymru with regards to the water level at Nant Moel, as a direct result of this the valves that feed water to the 'Mountain Ash' have now been closed. Here are two picture that were taken on 1st October.

I can now report (8th October) that the water levels are rising fast at Nant Moel, I will post picture soon.

Please remember the AGM at Aberdare Rugby Club on 26th November ar 7.30 pm.

September 2006

Rain at last! hopefully a few days of heavy rain will fill Nant Moel.

At the monthly meeting of the association it has been reported that we have lost 650 fish at the farm, this was do to two factors: 1. Lack of water 2. A pump failing over night. These fish were to be the first stocking of the 2007 season we are now in the process of arranging alternatives for next season.

August 2006

Weather, well perhaps its been one of the hottest summers on record (some of you might remember 1976) , please bear with us we do not/cannot stock when the weather is as hot as this, there is little point, low oxygen levels mean dead fish.

We have now stocked both Bwlfa and Nant Moel with almost triple stocking figures because of the recent rain. Water levels at Nant Moel continue to fall, however the rain has certainly brought the fish back to the surface with some anglers reporting large quantities of fish being caught.

July 2006

With the weather continuing to get hotter (if it can) fishing is proving very hard, this does however vary according to the method used. Water levels continue to fall, this seems to be the norm of our changing climate. Stocking has continued, we have stocked some very large fish into both Bwlfa and Nant Moel.

We now have two boats for Nant Moel again purchased as part of the EA grant, these cannot be used because of the falling water levels and security of these boats needs to be addressed.

Both bridges have been repaired again thanks to the members who gave their help on the first bridge and a special thanks to David (Dai) Jones for his continued help and support at Nant Moel.

June 2006

With the weather warming up the fish are moving to cooler water (deeper), intermediate lines seem to be proving the successful methods. Another 200 brown trout have been stocked into Nant Moel as part of the EA grant, these must be returned if caught.

May 2006

Stocking continues, fishing reports from Nant Moel have been very positive, new members taking good numbers of fish on the more traditional patterns.

April 2006

New club logo added to web site.

As part of the grant from the EA we have now installed new signs at Nant Moel.

Club expels two members for continuously flouting the association rules regarding the dropping of litter.

Reports from Nant Moel and Bwlfa are that both are fishing really well, fish being taken in most weather conditions at Nant Moel.

At Nant Moel the fish are free rising during warm sunny days. The brown trout are starting to show and quite a few have been caught and have over wintered well.

Natural patterns seem to working well on this water, although the freshly stocked fish are so aggressive they seem to take anything that move's these will however settle down over the next few days, if you are lucky enough to hook into one of these 'hold' onto your rod!

March 2006

Both Nant Moel and Bwlfa have been stocked for the start of the news season, picture of Nant Moel on 1st March are available here.

February 2006

The monthly meeting of the association voted not to stock Nant Hir reservoir due to the poor condition of the banks for fishing, worm fishing will now only be allowed at Bwlfa reservoir.

Permits and keys are now available for purchase, see Permit Sales.

January 2006

The association fly water Nant Moel has been featured in 'Trout Fisherman'.

The new membership cards have now been approved these will consist of a self seal membership wallet together with a rule book for each member. Junior and full membership permits are available from the permit sales page.

Web Application form now available on the permit sales page.

December 2005

EA have provided the association with a substantial grant to improve the fishing and facilities at Nant Moel. The main purpose of this grant to to improve the sustained fishing on this water. Further details will be posted here.

Secretary

September 22, 2005

Fishing shelters have been installed at Nant Moel, if these are not vandalised, a further shelter will be installed on Nant Hir.

September 19, 2005

Last stocking of the season has taken place, fish mainly in the 2lb region were stocked together with 5 - 7lb fish.

September 15, 2005

Water levels remain low, fishing is hard however anglers who are willing to move around the water have taken some good fish.

August 15, 2005

Nant Moel was again live with flying ants, this was frustrating to the members trying to catch fish, however small (16 - 18) ant patterns worked, both in brown and orange, the natural are a shade of brown and small, keep some in your fly box for these occasions you will not use them at any other time! when the trout are feeding prolifically like they have been this is the pattern to use.

August 9, 2005

Nant Moel was alive with feeding fish today, they were feeding on flying ant being blown onto the water. When fish are feeding like this only something that resembles the original works, although fish were taking small black hoppers.

August 6, 2005

Reports are now coming in from 'Nant Moel' that the brown trout are being caught, they have settled in well into this water and the 3 ½ lb brown has also been caught and safely returned, all brown trout must be returned to the water.

July 21, 2005

The association has stocked a small number of brown trout into Nant Moel. These are strictly 'catch and release' only, we are hoping that these trout will naturalise into this water and provide quality fishing for years to come.

July 19, 2005

Web site has been totally re-written, this is an on-going project and any member wishing to provide information or photographs should email them to enquiries.

June 2005

Fishing has proved hard this month on Nant Moel and Nant Hir, nymphs fished almost static (diawl bach & buzzers) as a team of three have taken fish on the hardest days.

May 2005

Fishing has been excellent this month with fish coming readily to most flies at Nant Moel, fish in the region of up to 6lb have been caught and returned by some anglers.

February 2005

The first stocking of the season was carried out on Saturday 26th Feb..

January 2005

It is sad to report that life member Glyn Jones has past away, he will be sadly missed for his humour and hard work that has helped the club achieve what we are today.

AGM

At the associations AGM held at Aberdare Rugby Club on Sunday 28th November 2004 the association new constitution was adopted. A new pricing structure was also adopted, there are price increases to both full member (£60 - £65) and concessionary (£45 - £55), there was a pricing restructure of all juniors, all junior prices are £20 (up to the age of 16) if after the age of 16 a member is in full time education up to the age of 18 then they will be entitled to continue to pay £20 (proof of continued education will be needed and permits will only be available form Trecynon Post Office or direct from the committee).

Fish Farm

As you are aware the club runs its own fish farm, providing the quality fish you as members catch all year. This is run on a voluntary basis, if it was not for a team of dedicated individuals the cost to join the association would be much greater. We are seeking help at the fish farm, anyone interested should contact the clubs secretary on 01685 876196 or email enquiries.

Environment Agency Rod Licence's

The environment agency licence enforcement team have been actively patrolling the associations waters, it is sad to report that eleven (11) club members have been caught without an environment agency rod licence's, it is the responsibility of all members to obtain a rod licence from their local post office.

Float Tubes

A number of members have asked about using 'float tubes' on Nant Moel, any anglers who wish to use this method of fishing are welcome on this water, but are reminded that a suitable buoyancy aid should be worn at all times and the do so 'at their own risk'. Take at look at the 'British Float Tube Association'.

Car Park

The car park area at Nant Moel has now been increase, this was necessary due to the large number of vehicles at certain times of the week

Disabled Platforms

We are in the process of 'pricing' the installation of two extra angling platforms, we will keep you informed of the process.

Associations Competition

The associations fly team qualifier will take place at Nant Moel reservoir on Sunday 11th April, the purpose of this qualifier is to pick a team of members to fish the inter-club competition against the Maerdy and the Llyn.
